Chain tensioners

Wippermann’s range of accessories also comprises the devices SPANN-BOX® and SPANN-BOY® for the automatic tensioning of chain drives.

They can be supplied in different types and sizes and thus cover a number of different application areas. The devices can also be fitted with limit or proximity switches in order facilitate function checks of the chain tensioning. On request, the casing elements can be supplied in stainless steel.

Designs made of special material and with specific guide geometries are possible as well.

Guide rails

Our wide range of accessories also comprises guide rails for roller chains.

They help support and guide the chains, prevent undesired slack span and, compared to steel rails, reduce slide friction.Standard guide rails are made of polyethylene. Furthermore, other types made of special materials, regenerated PE or C-steel rails for extra support and mounting optimization are available. C-steel rails are made of either galvanized or stainless steel. On request, we can also supply special designs, and milled constructions made of standard or special materials. We also offer guide rails for our accumulator chains.

Chain puller

By means of a chain puller the two open ends of a roller chain can be pulled together fast and easily in order to affix a connecting link, even if there is only limited space available.

The chain ends are simply put into the two blades of the sufficiently pre-released chain puller. By turning the screw, the two blades will draw closer to each other so that the chain ends have the correct distance to mount the connecting link.

Chain breakers

The chain breaker ensures a fast and simple breaking of the chain for shortening or for replacing a defective part.

Wippermann offers suitable chain breakers for different roller chain types according to ISO 606 up to a pitch of 1".Before using the chain breaker it is necessary to grind down the rivet heads (please wear protective goggles!) at the outer link of the breaking point in order to avoid damage to the bushings.

In the second step the chain is fastened at the breaking point by means of the set screw. The ground-down rivet head must be at the same side as the screw.

Thirdly, the drift is placed into the guide of the set screw, and the ground-down rivet bolt is driven out of the chain with a few hard blows of a hammer. Follow the same procedure for the second rivet bolt. In no case may the old components be used again.

The removed chain link can now be replaced by a suitable connecting link. In some cases leaf chains with the same pitch can be broken accordingly.

The roller chain can also be made by K&W Transmissies on length.

Protection clips, AFS clips

Due to its special design, there is a conveyor roller at every other pitch of an accumulator chain.

It is required for the transport of the material to be conveyed and ensures a safe accumulation of the goods without damaging them.

The chain link joint between the conveyor rollers forms a larger gap into which small parts such as screws, washers and chips or similar particulate materials can enter and then damage the chain or the entire system. Depending on the respective application area, there is also the danger of employees’ reaching into these gaps with their fingers when working on assembly and conveyor lines, which might cause injuries.

Simple retrofitting of AFS clips

Due to the flat design of the AFS clip the gap between the conveyor rollers is completely closed. Hence equipment and finger protection is considerably increased. The two-piece clip is mounted by simply snapping it onto the chain bushing of the inner link. Owing to its innovative hinge system it also covers the danger zone in the deflection range of the chain. Therefore it also allows for both-way deflections e. g. with omega drives.

The wear-resistant AFS clips ensure a trouble free operation of conveyance and assembly systems and contribute considerably to operational safety according to valid machinery directives.

Plastic clips for roller chains

Roller chains with straight plates (type series GL) are employed in conveying systems to transport a variety of different goods.

If the goods are not easily damageable like e.g. europallets, they can be conveyed directly on the chain. However, damageable goods such as chipboard or varnished and veneered components must be protected against damages caused by the chain during the conveying process.

Wippermann offers a number of different plastic clips made of POM. These clips are suitable for mounting on roller chains (type series GL), and they will prevent the direct contact between the chain and the items to be transported. Furthermore, they enlarge the contact surface and are thus able to guarantee a particularly safe conveyance process. The special design of the plastic clips also prevents a possible tilting in the defections of the chain conveyor. In order to strengthen the clip fixing even more and thus increase safety, Wippermann recommends the use of unrivetted roller chains.

For the conveyance of particularly delicate goods as well as for goods that slip easily, Wippermann offers plastic clips with an overlay made of thermo-plastic elastomer (TPU) with a hardness of approximately 85 Shore A. These clips significantly increase the adhesion friction coefficient between the conveyed item and the clip, and they can therefore ensure an absolutely slip-free conveyance process. On customers’ request, hardness grades between 50 Shore A and 90 Shore A can be supplied.
